Impact of El Nino | Heavy swell warning for Mauritius, Rodrigues, St-Brandon and Agalega

Weather news for Mauritius issued at 04h30 on Wednesday 16 September 2026.

General situation:

1. A heavy swell warning is in force in Mauritius and will be valid till 10h00 on Thursday 17 September 2026.

2. The strong anticyclone to the South of the Mascarenes is maintaining a windy and cold weather over our region.

Forecast for the next 24 hours:

Cloudy periods with rain mainly over the Eastern half of the island, to the South and over the central plateau. The maximum temperature will be below the mean by around 3 degrees Celsius and will be between 17 and 20 degrees Celsius over the central plateau and between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius over the coastal regions. The minimum temperature will be between 13 and 15 degrees Celsius over the central plateau and between 17 and 20 degrees Celsius over the coastal regions. The wind will blow from the Southeast at a mean speed of 30 to 40 km/h with gusts of the order of 80 km/h.

It is advised to be cautious during maneuvers at heights and on the roads due to crosswinds. Sea very rough beyond the reefs with Southwesterly swells of the order of 4 metres.

These swells may cause coastal inundations along the low-lying areas especially during high tides. Fishermen, pleasure-craft users and the public in general are strongly advised not to go out at sea and not to venture along the beaches. High tides : 14h33 and tomorrow 03h41.
